Qushli or Maydan Mountain

Diyar Hami

"Qushli" or "Maydan" mountain is 26 kilometers from the southwest of Kobane city in the Western part of Kurdistan. It stretches between three villages called: Maydan, the Lower Qushli, and the upper Qushli.

The history and formation of this mountain trace back to thousands of years ago and nobody knows how it was formed. It is 300 meters high and the top part of the mountain is covered with black rocks. It is said that in the past this mountain was covered with trees and until recently, about a century ago, this mountain was the habitat of Ghazal, wolf, and several other kinds of animals. In the past, there were also two springs near this mountain, one of which was where our grandfathers had swum in it. Every year, this spring would flow for a while and would become a source of life.

It is said that inside this mountain some caves and tombs contain antique items and golden jewelry. Some people used to come here and look for them. It is also said that some of these tombs have been found and later have been sealed.

There are also splendid views and scenery at the top of this mountain like "Kesma" where people used to take their livestock for grazing. There is also a pond where the water from melted snow is collected. This pond looks like a big marble rock that according to our elderlies, was made by humans. There is a place near "Kesma" called "Rovian" city that looks like a large rock with many holes in it that is apparently foxes' nest.

There is a cave next to "Qushli" mountain called "Oyshi" located on the south of Qushli on the Maydan village side. This cave used to be a place for the passengers to stay inside it in the past and the shepherds also stayed there in the winter. The name of this cave is "Oyshi" because in the past a family used to live in it and the housewife's name was Oyshi, thus the name has been used for the cave since then. There is also a mythical story about this cave; my grandmother used to tell me: "In a not so far time ago, a family from the lower Qushli village called the "Safari Ibi", owned a dog, "Qaro", that used to leave the house every night and return home in the morning while his nose was red. One night, "Safar" followed "Qaro" to the "Oyshi" cave. He saw that a lot of dogs were having a party there, dancing and eating pickles. Safar went back home and realized that it was the evil's wedding. The next morning, Safar told his dog that he was afraid of it! It is known that the dog left that house and never returned."

Qushli or Maydan mountain looks very beautiful during Spring nowadays. This place turns into a wonderful place for picnics and camping like a touristic destination. There are also several kinds of beneficial herbs found here. People use them for their healthy components.

It is worth mentioning that every year, the young and the old, and all the people make their Newroz fire here on this mountain on May 21.
