Free Woman's Square in Kobane

Our ancestors say that Kobane used to be a green city with lots of trees and green lands and rivers that made it a unique place. However, after 2000, due to a lack of water, the green lands were reduced. The city is known for its beautiful and historical places and it shines in the world. When people talk about Kobane, places like "Mishtanour, Qarabarkal, Miklate, and the Free Woman Square" draw everyone's attention.

Although this small city is not a very big city to visit, however, it always has been a place for people to go back to and remember their childhood memories.

We always asked our father why there is not a tourist attraction in our city. He would reply; that the Ba'ath regime in Syria did not let the youth work here in the city and they had to go to the big cities like Damascus and Lebanon to look for a job, in addition to this they ignored the Kurdish border cities and did not let them grow. They never built any beautiful statues, factories, office buildings, high towers, or anything else, so this city remained unattractive.

Days, months, and years passed. Everyone knows that in 2014 the city of resistance, Kobane, became ISIS's target for wars and attacks and thousands of Kurdish warriors got killed and injured. In order to achieve this holy goal, many things were sacrificed for the western part of Kurdistan and its nation.

In 2016, the war ruined 70 percent of the city's buildings, and most of the people rebuilt their homes with bare hands. One day in Spring, on March 16, 2016, we saw a large truck carrying a very big statue and brought it to 48 street. Many children were following the truck and they were shouting after it. We went to that place, they put down the statue slowly and the girls and women began to dance. When the white veil was removed from the statue, the indescribable pride and joy of the people appeared on their faces. That day, children, women, and youth's voices were mixed with the sound of music.

Later, Zirak Mira, the sculptor who had made this statue in cooperation with ten other sculptors, (this artist is originally from the southern part of Kurdistan), began his speech and informed everyone that this statue is a symbol of appreciation for the YPJ warriors and the resistance forces and the women. The women who lost their lives for the freedom of their nation. There were two tanks belonging to the ISIS forces on each side of this statue which were exploded by the Kurdish warriors.

From that day on, this place and this statue have got a national symbolism and meaning. According to Hassan Mira, this statue is 10 meters high and it represents a Kurdish revolutionary woman. This statue's face is in the sky, holding up one hand for the sun and her other hand on her heart, she has two angel wings as the symbol of freedom and it is white because it means calmness and peace.

Now, the people of Kobane have chosen various names for this place: "the Free Woman Square, Arin Mirkan Square, and Resistance Square". Now, we know how the cities become beautiful and rich, the cities only shine for their residents. If anyone wants to go out of their homes to relax and have a break, they directly go to this place. This place has become a nation's recreation spot, blood has been spilled here and now the city children worship this statue.
