Felaw Lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful and highest lakes in the Kurdistan Region. Felaw Lake is one of the tourist areas of the Balakayati region in Choman town, which has its own beauty and characteristics in all four seasons of the year. This beautiful lake is located at the foot of Mount Sekel and Mount Hasari Sakran, in the northeast of Erbil province near Choman town, 160 kilometers from Erbil and 9 kilometers from Choman.
The location of this lake is more than 3000 meters above sea level and is considered the highest lake in Greater Kurdistan.
The location of Felaw Lake is in a difficult area. Tourists and individuals have to walk for several hours to reach the lake. Because it is located in an elevated area, most of the time, it is cool and has a cold climate. The geographical location of Felaw Lake and the presence of high mountains around the lake and the remaining snow on the mountains make the temperature in summer, the lowest temperature reaches 10 degrees Celsius when the temperature reaches 40-45 degrees Celsius in other parts of Kurdistan.
The lake is always watery due to the formation of the well, which has a perfect alpine lake, as well as heavy rainfall in the area, snowfall, and melting snow throughout the summer seasons and the weather it has.
The existence of this lake in Kurdistan has its own importance and characteristics in terms of the tourism sector. The beautiful scenery in the area has made the number of tourists who go to Felaw to see the scenery, year by year is increasing and like the beauty of the scenery here, the tourists are diverse.
Choman tourism statistics show that about 300000 tourists visited the tourist areas of Balakayati last year, most of these tourists came to the area and visited Felaw Lake.
In addition to tourists, several Kurdish hiking groups visit Felaw Lake every year, and night camping is held in the area.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has announced that it is preparing to invest in the Felaw Lake in order to facilitate tourists to spend a good time in the area.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has made several efforts to promote the area and Felaw Lake. For this purpose, several celebrations have been organized and tourists from Kurdistan and other parts of Iraq have been invited to these celebrations.
