Qalaychi, a Cave Next to a Major Civilization Capital City

Kurdshop_ Qalaychi cave is located 12 kilometers away from the northeast of Bokan in the Mukriyan region, south of Urmia province. This cave is near Qalaychi Hill on which Izirtu ruins have been found. Izirtu was the capital city of the Mannai civilization.

Qalaychi Cave is one of the deepest and largest caves in Kurdistan. The opening hole of this cave is 8 meters and it is located at a height of 1750 meters over Qalaychi mountain. Several wells and big halls in this cave and 400 meters of the cave have been examined for the materials that exist there. The first well is vertical and it is 110 meters deep to reach the bottom of the well.

This cave was one of the unknown and mysterious places in Kurdistan up to 2002. The people of this area had many stories and legends about this cave. In 2002 a group of mountain climbers from Bokan climbed down the cave to a depth of 110 meters and they reached the first hall. Bokanian climbers called this hall Kaziwa because the sun beams light it.

Other mountain climbers from Bokan climbed the same part several times but finally a group of rock climbers led by the famous Kurdish rock climber “Moqbel Honarpazhouh” could climb down the second, third and third, and fourth halls. The second hall is named “Moqbel Hall” in honor of Moqbel Honarpazhouh who died when he was climbing a mountain.

The third hall which is called “Kurdistan Hall” is very peculiar. A vast lake full of water forms at the bottom of this hall with many stalactites made of lime all around it.

The fourth hall is made of several corridors and two small lakes. There is a corridor between the lakes. Bokanian climbers named this hall “Sirvan Hall”, Sirvan is a river in Kurdistan. There is another cave close to Qalaychi named Doukchi. It is possible that these two caves are connected to each other.
