New Year's Kulicha Festival among Yazidi Believers

Yazidi society is a representation of an ancient religion, whose roots go back thousands of years ago, despite the many difficulties, oppression, and tyranny they have suffered, their rich religious customs, rituals, behavior, and oral literature, (if not fully preserved and changed over time) are saved them to our time.

Among the ceremonies of the Yazidi community, the "New Year's Kulicha" (a kind of cookie) is an ancient ceremony that has long been celebrated among the Yazidis of the Sarhad region and for this reason it still exists among the Yazidis of the former Soviet Union because they are descendants of the Yezidis of the Sarhad region. Making New Year's Kulicha is part of a religious ceremony called "Hasawa Wednesday". It is unknown when this religious ceremony started and why it is only among the Yezidis of the former Soviet Union.

On the last Wednesday of the year, our people in the "former Soviet Union" start making a cake called "New Year's Kulicha" or "New Day's Kulicha". The basis of this holiday is related to the blessing and awakening of nature and the whole world. Traditionally, Kulichas are made as follows: They make a large dough of flour, butter, milk, yogurt, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients (there must be seven ingredients). They throw a pearl into the dough and knead it well. It should be in a way that they do not know where the pearl is in the dough. Then they put the dough in the pan and put it in the oven. Bake the Kulichas in the pan and leave them until morning.

On Thursday, the Kulicha is cut into pieces by the host saying, "By the permission of God and Sheikh Hadi". Cut the Kulicha into two pieces with a knife. This is called a double line. When the pearl fall under the knife, it is said that the pearl has fallen on the double line.

If the pearl does not fall on the double line, they cut the Kulicha again. The seven men of the house, the head of the household, the Zarzan, the shepherd, and Khatoon Fakhra are appointed. Then they set up the family members' piece. Whomever the pearl appears in, the year falls on them. Good and bad blessings of the house are attached to the person. The elders say that when the pearl falls into the piece of good people, the year will be full of blessings for the family. May this New Year's Kulicha bring you prosperity and blessings.

There is no doubt that no season of the year has been as much praised as spring. Spring is a symbol, a sign of the awakening of nature, the extension of life and emotion. Spring brings many festivals and holidays. International Women's Day, New Year's Kulicha, and Newroz. This brings joy and happiness to everyone's hearts. I wish our nation thousands of other happy springs along with the nations of the world. Once again, I wish you all the best on "New Year's Kulicha" and "Newroz". I wish you blessings, health, happiness, freedom, and independence.

Happy New Year Kulicha.

Note: New Year's Kulicha is like other foods of this holiday, including meat, Shorba, Kifta, etc. (Kulicha is also called Kilocha and Kadi in some areas).

It is New Year's ceremony. When day and night are equal and both become 12 hours, it is Newroz. It's New Year's Kulicha Festival.
