It is normal for men or women to lose 50 to 100 hair strands or those who have long hair 150 hair strands daily. However, if the hair loss is more than this and it is noticed that the hair is getting thinner, then it is necessary to visit a specialist doctor and determine the cause of the hair loss and seek appropriate treatment for this problem.
How can we know we need treatment for our hair loss?
When one sees a doctor, they would run some tests on the patient's hair who must have washed it beforehand. The doctor would check their hair roots especially the front part of the head or the crown part of it and randomly they would pull 40 hair strands of the patient's head. If four strands out of these 40 strands pull out, then the patient has a hair loss problem and needs to seek treatment, but if less than this is pulled out, it is only normal and cannot be considered as a hair loss problem.
What are the causes of hair loss?
1. "Genetics" plays an effective role, particularly among men who have other family members with this problem.
2. Most of the time women experience hair loss after childbirth. This means that during pregnancy, hair does not break. The breakdown of hormones, especially "androgen" during pregnancy is an important factor for hair loss after childbirth. The abundance or lack of thyroid hormones in the outside gland causes hair loss, too.
3. "Iron deficiency" is also another factor of hair loss thus, if a person has a low iron content in their body, they need to be treated with medication or food.
4. Using "hair dye" weakens the hair's roots and breaks the hair body, thus, it is necessary for women especially those who face this problem, to stop using hair dye or at least use it less than normal with longer periods between each time they dye their hair. Using hair straighteners and blow dryers also weakens the hair and burns the hair strands thus, it is better not to use them.
5. Applying "creams or gels" for hair has a direct effect on hair loss especially among men who apply gels and hair sprays more often. If this is done repeatedly, the hair loss process will happen faster.
6. People who are on a diet and do not consume food with "proteins or Omega 3 acids" will have weak hair strands and they will face hair loss. If you want to go on a diet, you need to know what you eat and what you do not eat.
7. Daily "hair washing" is one of the common mistakes that some people make. It is better to clean the hair twice a week with special shampoo and lukewarm water.
8. "Skin Allergies" is another cause of hair loss because when you have sensitive skin, the blood and the necessary components do not reach the hair follicles.
Those who have hair loss due to genetic reasons do not need to seek treatment especially men to regain their hair growth because they only can use hair transplanting to treat their condition and there is no other way for their problem. For hair transplanting, hair strands are pulled out from the back of the head or the sides of it, because these parts of hair strands are less sensitive to steroid hormone, and these parts usually have thicker hair.
The best age for hair transplanting is after 30, and the person's hair loss should be stopped. If not, even after transplantation, they might face hair loss again and they may lose the transplanted hair too.
There are a number of beneficial vitamins that can be obtained through food consumption that help strengthen hair follicles:
Most people consider healthy hair to be one of the signs of health or beauty, so hair, just like any other part of the body, requires many different nutrients to grow and be healthy. Thus, one of the ways to have beautiful and thick hair is to consume these food components:
Vitamin "A"
Every cell in the body needs vitamin A to grow which includes hair growth which is the fastest growing tissue in the body. Foods such as "sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, and pumpkins" are rich in beta-carotene that is converted into vitamin A according to body requirements. Vitamin A can also be found in dairy products such as milk, eggs, and yogurt.
"B" Vitamins
One of the most well-known vitamins for hair growth is the B vitamin called "biotin", which is used as an alternative treatment for hair loss. B vitamins help form red blood cells which transport oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles which is an important process for hair growth. This vitamin can mostly be found in "beans, almonds, meat, and fish".
Vitamin C
The body needs vitamin C to produce the collagen protein which includes an important part of the hair structure. Vitamin C also helps the body to absorb iron which is an important mineral for hair growth. The most important food sources for vitamin C are "pepper and citrus fruits".
Vitamin D
Lack of this vitamin is effective and it is related to hair loss, so it is believed that this vitamin plays an important role in hair growth and thickness. The human body can produce vitamin D if exposed to direct sunlight. There are, however, useful food products such as "fish, mushrooms, eggs, milk, and yogurt" that contain this vitamin.
Vitamin E
This vitamin is an antioxidant that resists oxygen pressure and is a good source for strengthening hair follicles. People who lose hair, after taking vitamin E for 8 months experience hair growth of about 34.5%. The food sources of vitamin E are "sunflower seeds, almond, spinach, avocado".
