Spinning Occupation in Kurdistan - Part 2

Petata (Pedals)

Every time the Makouk is passed through the threads, it is necessary to pull down two Gurds and push up two other Gurds so that they divide the threads into two sections and let the Makouk pass through them so the "weft" develop. Every spinning tool is made of four Petatas and every time the Jola is passing the Makouk through the threads he would push two of them.

Tiliesh

It is a narrow crack in the middle of the Makouk with a needle in it and the top part of it is covered with a feather so that the needle will not drop out of it.

Tapana

It is a piece of log that looks like a rolling pin. It is nailed to the ceiling in a way that it is precisely over Jola's head. A rope that is dropped down from the ceiling and it is tied to the end of the part where the threads are tied to, is hanging behind the Tapana next to Jola and it is fixed to the largest part of the spinning machine. Every time that the spinning develops, this rope must be loosened so that the threads could be knitted.

 Jawpecha

It is a well-polished log in the shape of a cube with two narrowed ends. It is fixed to a pair of V-shaped woods that are nailed to the machine's main parts. On one side of the Jawpech, there is a hole as big as a finger. The end of the spun threads is stuffed inside this hole and a piece of wood is put on it to keep the thread in place. The Jola spins it a little so that the spun threads would be collected.

Cholaka

It is another piece of wood hanging over the Gurd. The top part of this wood is in the shape of a V. Each part of this V-shaped wood is attached to a yo-yo called "Wulala". There is a thread on both sides of the yo-yos that is stuffed in the Gurds to keep them in a standing position. Every spinning machine has two Cholaka to fixate both ends of the Gurd.

Kharak

It is a wooden tool made of a large ring that is filled with a leather hoop and it is attached to the "Dokhi Khirak". Khirak is only used to spin the yarn and thread around a pipe in spinning. However, it can be used to spin wool, too.
