Spinning Occupation in Kurdistan - Part 1

Spinning

It is an occupation in which some tools are being used to make different kinds of carpets, rugs, and other local fabrics (Shimak, Jajm, Zangal, Bouzou, Popashmin, Barmal, and …). This occupation is one of the very old jobs done among the Kurds and there are many special terminologies used to name the tools that are no longer popular. Some of these terms include Kharak, Doukh, Daffah, Makouk, Sakin, Sarkilaw, and Sha. In the past, some Kurdish suits for men such as Rank and Chokha and Kawa and Pantol were made by spinning tools.

Jola

A person who is working with the spinning jenny and uses wool and cotton to make fabrics.

The tools used in Spinning

Barchana

It is a thin, wide piece of wood with nails on each end of it. It is made in a way that can be bent in the middle.

The length of the Barchana is equal to the width of the textile that is going to be woven. This piece of wood was used to keep the textile firm so that Jola could spin the part that is weaving the fabric; this is done while the Barchana is being moved for each row that is woven.

These are the other names of Barchana:

*Barjana

*Bargira

*Barlenchk

*Barenchk

Band Petata

It is a wide belt-like part. One end of it is tied to the Darpetata which is under a part called Gurda and the other end of it is tied to Petata which is a wide piece of log under the Jola's feet that is covered in nails. There are four parts in this tool which is equal to the number of Petatas.

Bangurd

It is a three-plied thread that has been spanned and then it is boiled in water. Later they spin it on the Pechik in order to make it stronger. Then they tie it between two Dar Gurd ends that are as wide as 15 to 20 cm in a special way. It is tied up with a tool called "Sachin" and the parts of the thread that are dropped down will be used to pass another tool called "Kire" between them. Each Bangurd is made of two pieces. One of these pieces is nailed to the upper Dargurd and the other piece is nailed to the lower Dargurd and they are attached to each other in the middle.

Pajgurd

It is a well-polished narrow piece of log. It is passed through the dropped threads from behind the four Gurds. Pajgurd is mostly used in spinning a special kind of fabric called Bouzou because the thread used to make Bouzou is a single-ply delicate one and it is very likely to cut while spinning it. If there is a Pajgurd on it, then the cut thread can be found and fixed more easily.

Prdalah

It is a piece of log between "Moqala" and "Daffah". It is nailed with two large nails and the dropped threads cover it.

Parr

It is a large feather of a bird. The feather is stuffed into a side of Makouk so that it would keep the needles in place. There is a pipe inside the Makouk to keep the needles fixed. In order to put the pipe inside a Makouk the following steps should be taken:

1. One end of the needle is screwed into the wall of the Makouk.

2. The other end of it is fixed in Makouk's rift.

3. The feather is stuffed into the side hole of Makouk and it covers the hole so that the needle will not drop down.
