Leila Nourani

Sarpishtwen

It is a kind of gold chain made of several ball shaped parts. Each ball shaped part is attached to a gold coin. The ball shaped parts are 18 carats of gold and the coins are 22 carats of gold. Women pin this chain to their Pishtwen (a shawl to be wrapped around the waist) on happy occasions and ceremonies.

Parang

Gold coins in small or large sizes that are hung on chains or rings on some types of jewelry like earrings, belts, Qash (a kind of long necklace), Tash Kilaw (Kurdish women's hat), and so on.

Paramilah

It is particularly used for those decorative little round sequins that are knitted into the wide form of a chain. The main part is made into a form where little parts could be hanged on it and some blue pearl-like decorations will be added. It is more common to use only one color of pearl or sequin and it is used as armlets.

Pirozah

It is a valuable sky-blue stone that could be used simply as a stone for decoration or it could be used as a ring's diamond or to be hung on necklaces or earrings.

Pishtasar/ Peshasar

It is a kind of jewelry made of some little ball shaped parts like Sarpishtwen with some chains being hanged on it. There are two rings on each end of it. It can be made of gold or silver. In the past, the gold type of this jewelry had little parangs which later changed into gold coins. Some women used red coins to decorate it. It was pinned with two hooks on each end and the ring part of it would be fixed in the middle. It was pinned on Sahda/ Shada and Gelgelah (a kind of hat and shawl of a particular kind of fabric worn by women like a turban) in the front and back.

There is a kind of this jewelry that when they pin it down the chain twists on the Shadah and Gelgelah. Some women had used Kurdish Toq (a kind of medallion made of gold) for the front and back parts of it. If it is worn on the front part of the head it is called Peshasar and if it is worn on the back of the head it is called Pishtasar.

Tanj/ Tel (Tiara)

It is a tiara made of gold, silver, or any kind of metal decorated with gems, pearls, or other valuable stones and sequins. When Taskilaw was not fashionable anymore, they began to use a tiara over their veil. Based on old stories (Bayte) it was not just particular to brides but it was rather a sign of ladyship.

Tekali/ Bankamouroo/ Barmour

The original name is Barmour. It was made of various kinds of Mouroo (pearl like decorations) of high value which were made into a chain. A flat or round mouroo or a piece of holy Quran's verse would be used as a medallion in the middle. It was as long to reach the waist. The same sized Mouroos would be made into a chain together but it was common to add gold balls in between them, too.

Jafhari/ Ja'fari/ Jahfari

It is a large but thin piece of gold with a little ring on it. There is a bird's shape on one side of it and a person's silhouette is carved on the other side of it. It is used as a medallion between some Lira and it is worn as a necklace. It can be used for other purposes, too. The name of this jewelry is derived from Ja'far Barmaki who was the Iranian minister of the Abbasid's Calipha.
