Women Jewelry in Mukriyan - Part 7

Ban Kazi

It is a sort of handmade lace for tying up the hair and braids. In the past women did not use to cut their hair short so they had long hair. They would divide their hair into two parts from the top of their heads then they would make them into braids. They would tie their braids with ban kazi so that the braids would stay tied and neat during the day.

A sort of this ban kazi was made of tents laces which were fabricated out of goat wool. A black and a white lace would have been tied together on which there were decorations like pom poms at the end of it and some sequins along the lace. They used to tie these laces to the back of their head with a pin. These sorts of laces were often used by middle aged or elderly women.

Another sort was made with laces that were decorated with some sequins in a zig zag manner from the top to the end. They would use about ten to twenty laces decorated with sequins of different colors. Different colors of gems and evil eye stones (a blue stone with a white and black dot in the middle), little coins, gold parts, and little ball bells were used to decorate these laces. They used to put the laces to sew or tie all these sorts of decorations to them. They tied the end of the laces in their hair to mix it with the hair. This was often used by the youth.
