Epigrams and Idioms

They say: Water knows where cheese is

 It is said to identify the culprit in terms of a sign.

 It is said that a man was robbed of a piece of cheese in a meeting. A mullah was in the assembly and they asked him. The mullah looked around and saw that someone was asking for water. The mullah turned to the cheese owner and said: Water knows where the cheese is!

They say: Water is the judge

 It has been used to resolve property boundaries.

They say: Water breaks the middle of the mountain

Effort does everything.

They say: Give autumn water to loved ones

Autumn water is preferable to all-time water.

They say: The water of the oppressor flows upwards, which means the oppressor has power)

They say: By God's will, the water stops

 God's power is infinite.

They say that the dead and the living are cleansed by water

Dishes, etc. are cleaned if washed with water.

In Maghrib Pray, it is not good to pour hot water. If it is poured, Bismillah (in the name of God) must be said, otherwise, the jinn will show.

Wherever the deceased died, he/she must be buried there, because he/she was given the land.

The water of life

Whoever drinks the water of life will never die. Prophet Khadir drank this water and became the living Khadir.

Belief

Danu water (the water that peas and wheat are boiled in)

Grains are harmful to livestock and if the sheep would eat them, they might lose their unborn lambs thus people would go to Haji Mamian (a village in the Mangurayati region in Mahabad) and bring water. If they filled the jar, they would not have to look back until they were out of sight from the village. They cooked Danu with this water and ate it with their children. They would pour the water into allies and say:

- Anyone who bathes three Wednesdays in a row, will have a headache that will not heal unless he gets a charm.

 - If someone wants to make black magic for someone to be hated, he/she put the magic in water so that it will never void.

- If you find black magic, you must open it and dip it in water to void.

- The bones of the sacrifice are thrown into the water.

- They write prayers for the strong wind and throw it into the water.

 - They would throw the slaughtered cows and sheep’s stomachs into the river because they believed it is an omen if the dogs would eat it.

- Dirty milk is thrown into the water.

- They throw a piece of an evil eye’s clothes in the water.

 - Chilagiri was a term used when two women having babies at the same time in a neighborhood and when they talked to each other one of the babies would not grow so they would say the baby had Chilagiri condition, in such circumstances they would collect soil, dust, garbage, and household waste and sprinkle it on the child for four Wednesdays.

 - If a child was old enough to leave the cradle, they would throw their stool pot into the water.

- Hawt Aw:

To remove dirt from something, they first take cups of clean red clay, wash the unclean thing with it, then pour clear water on it six times and say Bismillah (In the name of God) with it again and again. Finally, they say: Bismillah, the Most Gracious, the dirt to be cleaned with the water.

Prayer

May God not pour that water on anyone

It is said when a person or people repeatedly suffer a disaster and cannot get out of it. "Three or four of these innocent households die in accidents every year. May God not pour that water on anyone.”
