Children's Attitude and Personality in Reading Stories

Avin Taifour

Although stories are chosen as literary genres of all ages and have been read and written by former students, in children's literature; however, it has an important place because the most important type of literature for children is stories. Thus, "Miraj Ahmad" talks about the significance of children's literature like this: "It helps children to change speech into a fictional atmosphere, that is, it helps children to develop their imagination." (Miraj Ahmad, 2019, Stories and their role in Children's Literature, p.19). So, we see that when we talk to a child, they create an imaginary picture of the speech to achieve their dreams and goals.

Children are involved with the stories their parents tell them from a young age, so stories are an important educational tool that can be relied on to promote many different aspects of a child's personality. Therefore, parents should focus on choosing useful stories that carry positive values and useful habits to help the child become a better person in the future.

The benefits of reading and telling stories for children are many; the child can be involved with their emotions much more, it helps reduce the negative influence of society over the children, it strengthens the relationship and bonding between the child and their parents, it helps children be ready to enter the society, it enhances good behavior, it is a way of helping the children to feel calm and relaxed, stories can develop children's imagination and they are very useful educational tools.

In his research on this field, Miraj Ahmad says: "Stories are essential for children because they give the children value and principle and develop the emotional, psychological and moral aspects of their personality."

Life is not easy and there are always hardships and challenges that everyone goes through. Children are also involved in these challenges and they will face these hardships one day in life, so stories that convey morality can help them.

When parents read a love story for their children, it helps them understand and accept their different emotions. The child also becomes more self-aware and understands that there are other children like her/him with the same kinds of emotions and feelings thus, he is not alone in those emotions.

Children can learn to read faster than their peers through reading stories, making them more confident and able to communicate and participate in various school activities. The children can experience different and new situations via stories which will lead them to be very successful in their educational activities and their lives, too.

There are some stories that have a negative impact on children's personality. It means that such stories' events, actions, and characters can negatively turn the child into someone who does not have self-confidence, fears everything, and acts like a bad person; like "Shimka Zerin, Zarka Zeran, and Newroz story". Therefore, the stories that are read to them must be based on their life experiences.
