The First Festival of "Shal and Shapkan" Will be Carried Out in Zakho

Hawler (Erbil), Dihok, Zakho, Shirnakh, Barzan region, and … will take part in the "Shal and Shapkan" festival and the participants will show off different Kurdish clothes.

Kurdshop_ It has been announced that on June 21st in Zakho the first festival of "Shal and Shapkan" will be carried out in Pirdie Dalal. Performers from different cities such as Hawler, Dihok, Zakho, Shirnakh, Akre, Amed, and Barzan region will participate in this festival. The performers will show off various forms of Kurdish clothes in one day.

Dilkhwaz Musa, the Head of the Culture and Art Department in Zakho and also a member of the executive board of the Zakho festival said: The goal is to preserve the various forms of Shal and Shapkan and turn them into a cultural element. We also aim to make it clear to all that these elements are not particular to a specific social class.

Dilkhwaz Musa mentioned that; for the first time the dress making industry of these clothes has begun in Zakho and the date of this industry goes back hundreds of years ago. He also said that at first the Jews started this occupation and later the Christian residents continued to do it, and now a number of the citizens of Zakho are occupied in this industry.

The head of the Culture and Art Department of Zakho said that another goal of this festival is to show how different religions and regional social classes have lived in harmony together for many years.

He continued: this festival that will be opened on June 21st, 2023 at 6:30 P.M. in Pirdie Delal in Zakho Citt includes several different parts and sections. The Shal and Shapkan performance will be acted out by 15 young performers and later 20 other young performers will show off their clothes. The method of making these clothes will also be shown along with the performance.
