Kurdistan Mukryani, Author, Linguist, and Journalist

Kurdistan Mukryani is a Kurdish linguist, author, women's rights activist, and poet. She was born in 1947 in Erbil. Kurdistan Mukryani's father, Giwi Mukryani, named his daughter Kurdistan out of love for the Kurdistan Republic. The name sometimes caused her problems. Ba'ath officials in Iraq told her that her name was Kurdistan and that she was a separatist. They gave her Iraqi citizenship very difficult. Huzni Mukryani was her uncle.

In 1923, Kurdistan Mukryani's father, Giwi, and his uncle, Huzni, moved to Baghdad, in 1925 to Rwandz, and in 1926, they established a printing house there and published the magazine Zari Kurmanji.

Alongside the Kurdistan Printing House, Giwi Mukryani brings a camera to Erbil to take pictures of intellectuals and personalities. In Erbil, the magazine "Runaki", the newspaper "Hawler" and the magazine "Hataw" were published in his printing house.

Kurdistan Mukryani completed her primary, secondary, and high school education in Erbil. After receiving her bachelor's degree with the highest grade from the Kurdish Language Department of Baghdad University, she moved to Moscow to complete her higher education. In 1977, she received her doctorate in philology from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Soviet Academy. In the same year, she returned to Kurdistan and was employed at Suleimani University. From 1978 to 1982, she was the head of the Kurdish Language Department at Suleimani University and later at Salaheddin University. In 1982, she moved to Baghdad and until 1987 she was employed in the Kurdish Culture and Publishing Agency of the Ministry of Culture and Journalism. There she published articles in the magazines Bayan and Roshnbiri Nwe.

In 1991, she moved to the Netherlands and worked as an expert and evaluator at the Translation Center. In 1999, she supervised the preparation, rewriting, and publication of the Kurdistan Dictionary at Aras Publishing House. In 2000, she became an active member of the executive committee of the Kurdistan Information Forum and in 2006, she became its president. In 2001, she was the editor-in-chief of Shawshka, a seasonal cultural magazine for women. In 2002, she founded the Shawshka Center for Cultural Activities. In 2007, she was elected secretary of the Kurdistan Women's Union.
