Sharaf Khan Badlisi, the Author of Sharafnameh

Kurdshop_ Sharaf Khan Badlisi was born in 1543 near Ghom and he died in 1603 or 1604 in Badlis a city in the North part of Kurdistan. He was a Kurdish author and historian. His most famous book is Sharafnameh which is about Kurdistan’s history.

Sharaf Khan Badlisi whose real name was Mir Sharaf Khan Badlisi was Mir Shamsaddin’s son and was born on February 25th. Like his father, he was the chief of his tribe called Rojki (Rozegi) and he was also the ruler of Badlis City. Since his father fought against the Ottoman Empire, they had to move to the Safavid lands.

When Sharaf Khan was nine years old, he was educated with Safavid Shah’s children. He started working in governmental fields from a young age. He ruled many cities in the Safavid territory for about 20 years. In 1576, he was taken to court and fired from his position because he was convicted of acting illegally. This event made him so anxious and moved back to his homeland, Van, with 600 members of his clan in 1578. The ruler of that area named Khosrow Pasha asked Sultan Morad III (in 1574 to 1595) of the Ottoman Empire to proclaim him the chief of Badlis. He succeeded to be the ruler of Badlis and Moush.

In 1597 Sharaf Khan Badlisi began to write the old history of Kurdistan in a book named Sharafnameh. At that time Sharaf Khan was only the formal ruler of the area while his son Abolma’ali Shamsaddin was in fact in charge of everything.

Sharaf Khan lived until 1599. Some sources say that he died in 1603 or 1604. However, his book, Sharafnameh which narrates the Kurdish Shahs, rulers, and their families in detail is still the most important book written in Kurdish history.
