Hawar Hawraman

Wind Instruments:

They make a sound when they are blown into.

There are different methods of blowing into each one of them.

They have ancient history and each one of them is played in a special way in every region.

They are made of wood, brass (alloy of copper, zinc)

They are divided into two groups based on the method of blowing and manufacturing:

1. Wooden wind instruments

2. Brass wind instruments

Wooden wind instruments:

-The instrument is blown into without moving the lips.

There are different methods of blowing them:

1. The lips are pulled inside and the parts behind the two lips are filled with air and the cheeks are also blown up.

2. The lips are tightened and the cheeks are blown up a little, but there is no air behind the lips.

3. The player's lips touch their teeth and there is no air behind the lips or in the cheeks.

-The lips do not move in any of these three forms.

The wooden wind instruments are divided into two groups:

1. With Pik

2. Without Pik

Wooden wind instruments with Pik:

-These kinds of instruments are made with wood or some birds' bones such as eagle, owl, vulture, bearded vulture, flamingo, or pelican.

-The Piks are made with leather.

-When the player is blowing into the Pik, the instrument will tremble and the sound will go through the Pik to the instrument.

Two kinds of Piks are used for these instruments:

a) Single tongue Pik:

It is made of a fine and small piece of leather and it is placed on the spot where the instrument is blown into some instruments such as Clarinet, Clarinet bass, and Saxophone.

b) Double tongue Pik:

It is made of leather and it is placed between the players' lips. The leather's hard part is placed on the top end of the instrument. Naya (Narmanay _ Balaban), Doudouk, Douzala, Zorna (Sorna), and Abwa need double tongue Pik.

It is worth mentioning that Zorna, Abwa, and Karna (Karana), … Piks are made of Warsaw and placed inside the instrument.

  Wooden wind instruments without Pik:

-It is made of wood or reed.

-They used to blow into the instrument from the top part of it.

-According to the evidence found in the ancient regions of Kurdistan and Zagros mountains, these instruments were made of gold or silver in ancient times.

In order to play Shimshal, Kawal (Qawal), and Bilwer, the lips are tightened and they blow into the instrument on one side of it.

Fika instrument is made of wood or reed. A piece of wood is stuffed into the instrument on the part where it is blown into and it is simply blown into directly.

The flute is made of wood, brass, or reed and it can be played in three ways:

1. The player can blow into it on one side of it.

2. The player can put the flute in the middle of their mouth and blow into it directly.

3. The player blows into some special points.

-Since the lips do not move in either of these three ways, this instrument is classified among the wooden wind instruments.

Brass instruments:

-They are made of brass (an alloy of copper and zinc).

-The player puts their lips on a special part of the instrument. The lips are moved quickly and at the same time, it is blown to make the sound.

-Trumpet, trombone, and tuba which are Western music instruments are played in this way.
