Mohammed Shekho and a Lifetime of Service to Kurdish Music

Mohammed Shekho has recorded 14 cassettes and his works have been released in all parts of Kurdistan. Many of his songs, including "Ay Le Gule", have been covered by many artists.

Mohammed Shekho was born in 1948 in Girbanin village near Qamishli, West Kurdistan. His real name is Mohammed Salih Sheikhmus.

When he was a child, Mohammed Shekho moved with his family to Khekok village and settled there. He was the oldest son of his family. He started school in 1959 at the age of 11 due to his family's financial situation and left after three years.

He met several Kurdish artists during his school years and began singing in 1969 because he was influenced by them. From 1969 to 1972, Mohammed Shekho worked for Kurdish art in Lebanon and studied music in Beirut for two years. In 1972, he formed a band called "Coma Sarkaftin" with some friends. In 1973, he moved to South Kurdistan, where he continued his artistic career and established contacts with other Kurdish artists.

After spending some time in southern Kurdistan, Mohammed Shekho went to Damascus, Syria, where he recorded his cassette called "Ay Gawre". But at that time, the Syrian state did not allow him to stay and he was arrested several times.

The Kurdish artist once again moved to South Kurdistan due to the violence of the Syrian state and joined the Peshmerga forces. After the collapse of the Southern Revolution, Mohammad Shekho moved to East Kurdistan and reportedly went to Gumbad (Gonbad-e Kavus) in the Golestan province, Iran and recorded a cassette there.

Besides his musical career, Mohammed Shekho also taught in East Kurdistan for several years. After a while, the Iranian regime described him as an opponent of the regime and ordered his arrest and imprisonment. Because of this situation, Mohammed Shekho returned to Syria after 11 years, where he was warmly welcomed. Because of this love and warm welcome towards Mohammed Shekho, the Syrian state repeatedly arrests and imprisons him. But this decision of the state cannot stop the voice of Mohammed Shekho. He sings his best songs in prisons and passionately expresses the pain, sorrow, desires, and beliefs of his people. Mohammed Shekho returned to Qamishli in 1983 and continued to serve Kurdish art until 1988. He died on March 9, 1989, and more than 70000 people mourned him in Qamishli.

Mohammed Shekho has had a great influence on Kurdish music and his music and songs are still interpreted and covered by many artists. He enriched the culture and art of the Kurdish nation with his music and songs. Mohammed Shekho has recorded 14 cassettes and his works have been released in all parts of Kurdistan. Many of his songs, including "Ay Le Gule", have been covered by many artists. After the death of Mohammed Sheikho, many of his songs were released again and many people still listen to and sing them.
