Aram Tigran, an Armenian Artist who Served Kurdish Music for Years

The well-known artist “Aram Tigran” who stays in people’s memory is one of those artists who took his place among the most popular musicians in the Middle East and he had and still has many admirers. Aram Tigran is an artist who could make the audience happy by playing Cümbüş (Jombush) and his wonderful melodies. This Armenian singer and composer of Kurdish music had touched so many hearts through his songs and voice.

In 1915 when the genocide of the Armenians started, this artist’s family moved from Amed a city in the North part of Kurdistan to Qamishlou in the West part of Kurdistan. Aram Tigran was born in 1934 in Qamishlou.

Aram Tigran got familiar with music by his father. His father was known by the Armenians as an artist who got rescued from “the great catastrophe” (the Armenian genocide).

Clearly, it was Aram’s father who made his son get familiar with the music. Aram’s father was a professional flute player. Aram began to play Cümbüş when he was 9 years old. After a while due to his great work and his talent, he started to play in weddings and other ceremonies. Since he could sing in different languages like Armenian, Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, and Greek, he was able to have many audiences in those nations. This is why he is still well-known among many people and his songs are still very popular.

Aram Tigran moved to Iravan, Armenia’s capital, in 1966 and worked for Iravan radio station, which was one of the most significant radio stations for music programs, for 18 years. He continued his work in Europe after 1995. He moved to Athens, Greece’s capital after a while and stayed there. He took part in the Newroz festival in Diyarbakir in North Kurdistan in 2009. Later he got ill very severely and was moved to Evangelismos hospital in Athens for treatment. This famous artist died on August 8th,2009 after many years of artistic works.

Aram Tigran had three children. He was supposed to be buried in Diyarbakir according to his will but the Turkey government refused this request thus he was buried in Brussels.

 Aram Tigran was one of those artists who could make many people happy through his songs and people wouldn’t get tired of listening to him. People were attracted more and more to his character and his art and he is still very popular among them. He is particularly very famous for his song “Ay Dilbare” (Hey lover), the lyric of which is from Faqhe Tayran’s poem (a Kurdish Poet).

Aram Tigran had a body of 14 albums. He recorded 230 Kurdish songs, 150 Arabic songs, 10 Syriac songs, 30 Turkish songs, 7 Zazaki songs, and 8 Greek songs in those albums.

Aram Tigran once said:

If I could come back to Earth once more, I would melt down every Tank, Gun, and armor and I would make musical instruments and Cümbüş (a Turkish stringed instrument) and Zorna (a kind of Kurdish wind instrument).
