Every year on November 25, coinciding with the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, various activities are held by international organizations and activists to stop and combat violence against women.
Also, this day is considered a special day, and every year women's rights activists and Kurdish civil society activists in all four parts of Kurdistan, hold seminars, marches, and large-scale meetings, to pay attention to this day.
Women in the international society and unfortunately in Kurdish society are still subjected to violence by men and patriarchal beliefs daily.
In societies where women are not free and independent, their dignity is violated; intellectual and educational development in all areas of life is weak in these societies and society cannot offer a healthy and vibrant generation to the world community.
Therefore, Kurdish activists continue their efforts to raise awareness about equal rights between women and men on international occasions such as November 25, March 8, etc.
The history of November 25th
On November 25, 1960, in the Dominican Republic, three sisters, Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa were attacked and killed while fighting against Trujillo's dictatorship. In June 1960, Patria Teresa founded the largest secret movement against the Trujillo dictatorship. Both of her sisters were also involved in the movement. The impact of the movement was so great that in the same year, the dictatorship was forced to say that the Mirabel sisters were their biggest threat. Following this announcement, on November 25, 1960, the three sisters were raped and then murdered, but the struggle they started continued even after their death. The movement led to a widespread uprising that ended the dictatorship.
At the 1981 Latin American Women's Conference in Colombia, November 25 was designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in memory of the three sisters who fought for freedom.
