Huzni Mukeryani, the First Kurdish Historian Writing in Kurdish Language

Seyyed Hossein Huzni Hassan or Huzni Mukeryani was born in 1893 in Mahabad. Some other sources claim that he was born in Bughdakandi village between Bokan and Saqqez cities. He began his elementary education with his father and uncles and later after his father died and due to hardships in his life, he went to Maragha and Tabriz at the age of 12, and later he went to "Yarivan" from Tabriz and became a private teacher. After staying in Yerevan, Armenia's Capital city, he went to Tiflis, Gorgia's Capital city and after a short time, he went to Baku.

After a short while, Huzni went to Istanbul and stayed there for four years. He began studying the historical sources and he began to work as a "calligrapher" to make money. At the same time, he wrote articles for two magazines, "Khavar" and "Chehrenameh", in the Persian language.

He learned all about publishing newspapers in Istanbul. In addition to this, Istanbul's condition at that time impacted his views and thinking and after some time he went to "Halab" and in 1912 he bought a printing office in Germany. After three years, this printing office reached Halab in 1915. It is estimated that Huzni must have been 33 years old at that time.

He published his first historical work in Halab and in 1925 he went to Baghdad. A year later he went to Rwandz and in 1932 he received the certification for establishing the "Kurmanji Dialect" newspaper. In 1935 he received a second certification for establishing the "Lightness" newspaper in Hawler and after some time due to some people's enmity, he went back to Rwandz and later to Kirkuk, Hawler, and Rwandz again. In 1941, after being arrested he was forced to abandon Kurdistan forever. He went to Baghdad, stayed there, and died in 1947.

After settling in the South part of Kurdistan, Huzni had concluded that in that political atmosphere the best way to keep a nation aware and conscious is to write down the history so that the obstacles that prevent Kurdish people from becoming one nation would be eliminated, thus, Huzni continued his work as a historian and a journalist despite his difficult life as two necessary parts of making a nation.

"Ghunchay Baherstan" (Spring Bloom) was his first Kurdish historical book that was written in the Kurdish language by Huzni Mukeryani in 1925. Despite some historical mistakes and methodological flaws, this book is dedicated to discussing the history of the origin, language, and civilization and proving the ancient history of the Kurds. It is the beginning of writing the history in different sections which is a deviation from the traditional form of documenting history which was in fact writing down the events and praising the high ranked families and Amirs of Kurdistan in the Persian language.

Unlike the old tradition in writing history which was legitimating and praising the Kurdish Amirs, Ghounchay Barstan was a narration of the political events and Kurdish identity and their life in the past for paving the way for constructing the Kurdish nation.

Thus, one can say that creating a unifying Kurdistan and revealing the life of people in Kurdistan in order to illustrate them as an ancient and great nation was done in Ghounchay Baharstan for the first time written by Huzni Mukeryani. He was the one to bring this aspect of Kurdish history into the discourse of the Kurds and his book was the first work in historical Kurdish discourse. Thus, Ghounchay Baharstan can be identified as the beginning of historical discourse in the Kurdish language.
