Shanishin Performance was established in February 2022 in Mardin, North Kurdistan, as a theater group led by some Kurdish teachers and volunteers.
Our goal is to serve the Kurdish theater and the Kurdish language too. Shanshin Performance Group focuses on Kurdish and international theater, creates new plays, and wants to raise the artistic level of Kurdish theater with other disciplines in a new way. We want to become a symbol of Kurdish art, not only in one city; but in all four parts of the country and Europe.
Shanishin Performance Group announced its establishment with this call and in the same year (2022) will stage the play Bejir, a translation of a work by Moliere. As their first play, Bejir attracted a lot of attention in Mardin and other cities. Although Bejir is a play by a Western writer, the content of this play has been translated according to Kurdish culture and many elements of popular literature have been incorporated into this play.
Shanishin Performance releases its new play "Cancer" in the halls this month. The play is based on the text "Jocko's Birthday" by French author Roland Topor. The Kurdish text has been rewritten by director Recep Icen and Khalid Artoshi according to Kurdish culture and discusses issues of colonialism and anti-colonialism.
The basis of this play is Kurdish folk culture and literature. The play contains three subjects that existed in Kurdish society previously but no longer. Along with these subjects, it contains dozens of folk proverbs and songs.
The play "Cancer" will be premiered on March 18th in Mardin in the “Jora Art” theatre Hall in support of those affected by the earthquake in North Kurdistan. On March 26th, “Cancer” will be performed again in the same theatre hall.
