Many studies of Islam approach the work of moral striving by examining the range of what Muslims call “Islamic” practices. This approach opens up a field of practice that is rich with debate, contradiction, and paradox. Scholars have asked how practices that may appear to some as un-Islamic or non-Islamic become an integral part of an Islamic tradition.
