Khira Hanjiran in Mahabad, A 4000-Year-Old Strone Script

Shino Rasouli

On the Mahabad-Sardasht road, 28 kilometers away from Mahabad, there is a group of rocks that belong to the third period of geology. There is a large rock among them that depicts a person riding an animal. The age of this stone is 4000 years.

The area consists of a group of hills (geographically known as Mahour). The illustrations on one of these hills are drawn a stone and it is called Shist. Every 30 illustrations are drawn on two rocks. The main group of rocks depicts 24 illustrations and the second group of stones shows 4 illustrations that is located a short distance from these two groups of stones about 5 meters away. The illustrations include animals and humans.

Geometric and symbolic drawings that can be counted as symbols of a particular object are not found in this set of rocks. The human images on these rocks all have similar features. The body of human images is crossed, some of them have arms and legs completely, some of them do not have hands and some have larger than normal hands.

In the image on the rocks, appear to have a dagger or a sword or something similar to them and they seem to be chasing one another. In addition to this, in the upper part of these rocks, a number of animals with long tails that look like foxes can be seen.

The images on these rocks look like horses and their riders hunting animals, too. Due to its historical value, this monument is considered one of the tourist destinations of Mahabad.

There are other images on these rocks, the most important of which is the Capra. Capra is the symbol and manifest of the ancient people of this area especially during the Mana civilization.

The Capra is an ideogram artistically. It has often been a symbol and code that exists in different parts of Iran's plateau and even elsewhere around Himalayan mountains (Tabat and Pamir) and around the heights of the Western Alps in France and Italy, we can even see the same images of Capra in the stone scripts of the US: Nevada, California, Utah, and Arizona created by native American Indians with Asian origins.

These images have been carved for thousands of years; what is really interesting to us is that a large number of these images depict a kind of trained dog breed like hound dogs that are carved on the black stone.

The image of these dogs shows us that humans had trained dogs from at least the 9th millennium BC. These rocks with their images are an ancient book that indicates the life story of those who lived and trained hounds at least 11 thousand years ago.

It should be noted that women played an important role in this. In ancient paintings on these stone plates, one can trace the footprint of thoughts, beliefs, rituals, and all the biological events of the inhabitants of this land.

These rocks are the ancient and unique birth certificates of those people who had lived on this land thousands of years ago.

The historical monuments in Kurdistan are not studied and analyzed and if they have been studied, the information has been misleading or they did not let the projects end. For example, these images in Khira Hanjiran, say that they are not exactly accurate to indicate a specific story.

The rocks in Khira Hanjiran have not been studied well. They were investigated for a short time and later they were left or no one was allowed to do any investigation.

Searching historically, one can see that there have never been any studies done on these rocks and even the people of this area do not know that there is such a valuable thing in a city in Kurdistan.
