The Archeological Sites of Sheran Hill in the Northern Mesopotamia - Part 2

The Statue of the Male Kings

Since Sheran Hill is close to the Euphrates River, it is a rich place in agriculture and production. This area is a plain land thus, people have been easily able to organize themselves and make good use of it in the field of religion and government.

The statues found during the excavations in this area and the surrounding lands, mostly belong to the Gods. It is also here that the statue of male kings appeared for the first time and before the establishment of the state hierarchy, a religious temple was found here. This indicates that religion or belief was in the hands of men in this area, creating a primary grading system of the state. The simultaneous history of this place with the Sumerians along with their architecture, highlights the historical significance of this place.

The discovery of weapons such as swords and similar weapons used for self-defense and attack means that the system of state was established there. It seems that there were both self-defense and attacks. A place where self-defense and assaulting weaponry can be found is a place where the soldiers had to guard something.

There was a culture in 2700 BC with particular features and characteristics of its own. Hattians or Hittites. Then it fell under the control of the Hittites and the king of Hittite. "Shup Pluluma" (344 BC to 322 BC) used this place as his base and attacked Washukani, the capital city of Mitanni. The current name of Washukani is Srekani. The border resident tribes divided the city into two parts. The city had been attacked by the Assyrian king several times. Later, Sargoni II (Akad) attacked this region and plundered it in 712 BC. After that, the Assyrians fell under the Medes' rule and then under the Persians. The Great Alexander, Salafcos, Rome, and Byzantines ruled it respectively. This area was also used as a graveyard after the Christianity spread.

All the Signs of State Were Found in Sheran Hill

It can be said that the people who lived in this area at the time had three authority roles. A religious temple was established there in 3600 BC. After that, an administrative palace was discovered where many trading seals were found and nine swords made of metal were found there, too. This shows that there was an economic organization and an administrative authority in Sheran Hill.

It can be said that in the Sumerian era, the first form of city-state was established on the Sheran Hill with the Urukan state a form of a more modern state system was organized. Over the river, they may have had a cultural relationship with each other in the agriculture field but when the circumstances of that stage are compared together all the signs indicate that politically and administratively, they have been in contact with each other.

From 3300 to 3000 BC, a palace was built, a temple was also built during 3600 to 3500 BC, more than two thousand seals were found, and valuable metal objects were also found on the Sheran hill. All these signs show that at that time aristocracy was common in Sheran Hill and the first official example of a state, religion, and cultural center were established on Sheran Hill.
