The Narrative of Broye Haske and the Agri Republic - Part 1

Broye Haske is one of the Kurdish leaders and revolutionaries who fought against the invaders of Kurdistan for years and is one of the founders of the Ararat Republic.

Broye Haske was from the Jalali Clan, the chief of the Hesesoriyan tribe and he lived in the Agri region.

He was a talented person in his youth.

After the defeat of the Ottoman government and the establishment of a new Turkish government, and after the suppression of the Uprising of Sheikh Saeed Piran in the North part of Kurdistan, the Turkish government began to forcibly transfer the Kurds to the remote regions of Turkey; Broye Haske was one of the chiefs of Jalali clan and was a resident of the Agri district.

Broye Haske's uprising began as follows:

During the time Kemalists were ruling Turkey, after the suppression of the Sheikh Saeed uprising, the Turkish state began to move Kurds from their places to distant areas. One of those places where the Kurdish people were expelled by Kemalists was the Agri region. The Turkish army attacked the influential people to keep them away from their residences so that they would not be able to start another uprising. One of them was Broye Haske who was informed that Turkish forces had decided to remove him from his hometown. On May 16, 1925, Turkish soldiers raided his home to arrest him, but he was not at home at that moment.

As it was known at that time, Broye Haske told his family: "The invaders will not stop. Enough is enough, bring me my gun and horse." According to sources, some gunshots were heard at the time.

After Broye Haske and 30 members of his relatives went to the Agri Mountain with him, there was a lot of fighting between them and Turkish army forces. In those battles, the Turkish soldiers were defeated and forced to withdraw. Broye Haske warriors obtained many weapons and explosives in these battles.

According to the information mentioned in a book called "Amar Khan Shikak" (written by Mohammad Salih Qaderi), after these clashes, a meeting was held in the village of Jabe between Broye Haske and the Turkish commanders. The Turkish commanders demanded the surrender of Broye Haske but he refused to do so.

After Broye Haske began his uprising against the Turkish occupation, it was not long before "Darzanda Bagi Hasani" the son of Suleiman Ahmad and Khals Bag, Abdulqader, Kazm Bag, Tajadin Bag, Ayub Agha, and many other famous and brave men at that time contacted Broye Haske forces.

According to the information in the book "Amar Khan Shikak", among them were fighters from the Kaskoyi, Sakan, and Shamskan tribes. They went to Agri with their families and Agri became a symbol of resistance.

In the spring of 1927, the Agri revolutionaries repeatedly attacked the Turkish army and they liberated the Bazidiyan region once.

Khoyboun supported the Ararat Uprising

This is where it gets clear how Khoyboun supported the Agri uprising and who was involved in the uprising.

When the Agri uprising was known by the majority of the people, Ehsan Nouri Pasha was informed and he went to Agri Mountain on the decision of the national organization of "Khoyboun". A few weeks later on September 13, 1927, the Turkish army launched a comprehensive attack on Agri Mountain. Some sources pointed out that Turkish soldiers were more than 10000 at that time. They stationed a large military unit between the large Agri and the small Agri Mountains from the north and launched a major offensive attack.

According to the book, "Amar Khan Shikak" by Mohammad Salih Qaderi: after Turkish soldiers began bombarding with heavy weapons, the fighters of the Sakan tribe who were on the side of the East part of Kurdistan came on the demand of the revolutionary forces of Agri and a fierce battle between them happened which lasted for several days. As a result, hundreds of Turkish soldiers and commanders were killed and taken hostage, many weapons and explosives fell into the hands of Kurdish fighters and the Turkish army retreated.

It is known that after this great battle, Ehsan Nouri Pasha began to organize the forces of the fighters of Agri Mountain. The Khoyboun organization also sent their members to Agri.

Over time, more people joined the Agri fighters. After the great military and political successes of Agri revolutionaries, the "Ararat Republic" was established in the liberated region of Agri based on the demand of the Khoyboun organization.

How was the "Ararat Republic" established?

After Ehsan Nouri and Broye Haske united, a lot of significant things happened in Agri Mountain. It is said that for the first time, the Agri fighters wore military uniforms and put on formal military hats. They had the image of large and small Agri mountains on their shields. The officers' uniforms were worn with the logo of Khoyboun and in order to recognize their military ranks they used the pen, the wheat, the dagger, and the sun symbols. The flag of Kurdistan was raised in those areas where had been liberated from the enemy's control.

According to sources, in 1927 the Agri uprising leaders held their national meeting on Mount Agri. The meeting organized the task of managing the independent and free Agri region. They chose their own board of directors.

Broye Haske and Ehsan Pasha were also elected as general leaders. Broye Haske became the General leader of the Agri revolution and Ehsan Nouri became the General Commander of the Agri soldiers. A national anthem was chosen called "Halba Agri", too, and later they published their newspaper called "Agri".
