A Kurdish Author Received the Human Rights Prize

Since 2016, both Germany and France have awarded the prize on World Human Rights Day to selected individuals and institutions from around the world who have worked under pressure to protect human dignity, human rights, and the rule of law in their countries.

Dr. Choman Hardi, a writer, university professor, and feminist academic, received the French-German Human Rights Prize on Sunday, December 10, on Human Rights Day.

On Human Rights Day (Sunday, December 10), German and French Foreign Ministers Annalena Barbock and Catherine Colonna announced the recipients of the Franco-German Special Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

The recipients include leaders of civil society organizations, lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists. Among the 12 recipients of this year, there was a Kurd. Dr. Choman Hardi was one of the personalities who received the award for her humanitarian activities and work on women's rights.

"This award is given to people who can be the voice of women, refugees, LGBTIQ+, and prisoners. They often risk their freedom and lives in the most difficult circumstances," the German and French foreign ministries said.

Dr. Choman Hardi said on her Facebook page: “Since 2016, both Germany and France have been presenting the award on Human Rights Day to selected personalities and institutions around the world who are under pressure to protect their dignity of people, human rights, and the rule of law have worked.”

She added, "The award goes through two stages. Initially, an activist or organization is nominated at the national level, then this person competes with candidates from all over the world. Finally, a selection of these people will be awarded. Jina Amini and Narges Mohammadi were awarded last year. This year, I am one of the twelve recipients of the award.”

Who is Dr. Choman Hardi?

Dr. Choman Hardi (born on January 29, 1974, in Sulaimani, South Kurdistan) is a Kurdish writer, poet, painter, translator, feminist, and university professor. Choman Hardi is the daughter of Kurdish poet and politician Ahmad Hardi. She writes in Kurdish and English and most of her works, research, and writings are related to women and feminist issues.
