Armita Garavand, a Kurdish girl from Kermashan province in East Kurdistan who lived in Tehran with her family, was attacked and beaten by hijab guards in the Tehran metro on October 1 while going to school with two friends. She fell into a coma and was taken to Fajr Hospital in Tehran which belongs to the army of the country.
A heavy security situation has prevailed at the hospital for the past 28 days. Journalists who went to the hospital to report on the incident were arrested and Armita's family was pressured by the security forces to prevent them from publishing any information.
Armita passed away today after 28 days in a coma, and government forces tried to hide the truth from the public. The 17-year-old Kurdish girl was killed by a new repressive group called the Hijab Guard, 15 days after the first anniversary of the killing of Jina Amini by Tehran's Morality Police.
After the assassination of Jina Amini and the outbreak of the Woman-Life-Freedom Revolution in East Kurdistan, which later spread throughout Iran, the forced removal of the scarf and rejection of the hijab by Iranian women and girls became a major part of the civil struggle. Dozens of women and girls have been killed and hundreds imprisoned for this. Armita Garavand is the latest victim of the Woman-Life-Freedom revolution and the rejection of the forced hijab.
