Every year watermelon festival is held in Diyarbakir and the largest watermelons are exhibited in this festival. The surrounding areas and all of Diyarbakir's cities participate in this festival with their large and delicious watermelons. A competition is also held to choose the largest and heaviest watermelon that is the most delicious and the winner will be granted a prize. There is a watermelon statue in the center of Amed as a symbol of the city.
As the previous years, this year the harvest season for watermelon has begun in Amed Province in the North part of Kurdistan. This year, 27 thousand dunams of land are allocated for planting watermelons.
Every year during July and August the harvesting season for watermelon begins in Diyarbakir. However, the popular watermelons of Diyarbakir that grow only in the muddy lands near the Tigris River bank and are as large as 50 kilograms are ripped in September.
These watermelons are green and white from the outside and they are red on the inside; they are very sweet and they deserve to be so popular.
Every year after watermelon is grown completely in the North part of Kurdistan, they are collected on lands as vast as thousands of dunams by the workers and they are sent to all the cities of the North part of Kurdistan and Turkey, and they are even exported to foreign countries.
Last year 112 thousand tons of watermelon were produced in Diyarbakir and this year it is foreseen that it might reach 150 thousand tons.
Ali Ehsan Suo, Diyarbakir governor participated in the first day of watermelon harvest and said that in the world, China is the first country that plants and harvests watermelon, and the second country is Turkey. He also mentioned: this year in Diyarbakir 27 thousand dunams of land has been allocated to watermelon cultivation. Last year 112 thousand tons of watermelon were produced in Diyarbakir and this year it is foreseen that it might reach 150 thousand tons.
Diyarbakir watermelons have received geographical marks for their good smell, taste, and appearance, and they are recorded by the name of Diyarbakir as a special brand which makes this kind of watermelon very popular.
